A beautiful Victorian peacock blue glass desk thermometer in the form of an Egyptian obelisk. The front is inset with a frosted white glass panel marked off in both Fahrenheit and Réaumur scales, the latter a now-obsolete scale that was widely used in France, Germany and Russia. The obelisk form remained popular throughout the 19th century due to exciting new discoveries of Egyptian antiquities. The heavy glass obelisk could also perform double duty as a paperweight. Origin: Europe, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, a 1/16" flake on one edge of the base. Size: 7" tall.
