Victorian Original letter and Vintage Antique Worlds Columbian Exposition USS Illinios Postcard 1893. This is a Vintage Antique Worlds Columbian Exposition Official Souvenir Postcard with the date on the front of 1893 and a Letter (dtd. 1959) from Maurice John to Paul in memory of Paul serving on the USS Illinois battleship that is on the front of the card since this Exposition was held in Chicago IL. In the summer of 1893, 1 out of every 4 people in the United States traveled to Chicago to see the World. The 1893 Columbian Exposition, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery, showcased the innovative wonders of the 19th century. Fairs and expositions were extremely popular at that time. Over 50 of them were held from 1851- 1889; each one trying to outdo those that came before. Few could compare with the magnificence and splendor of the 1893 Columbian Exposition. The Paris exhibition had taken place in 1889, with its commanding trademark, the Eiffel Tower. Congress saw the Columbian Exposition as an opportunity to display the growing economic and industrial strength of the United States. They strived to surpass the Paris exhibition in every possible way. This postcard is in good vintage condition, is uncirculated and has a printed stamp that looks like President Grant. A beautiful card and a wonderful piece of history. World Columbian We don’t polish these previously owned well loved pieces so we can keep the original patina. We try and photograph all of the pieces next to a ruler so you can see the actual size.
