Victorian master crystal glass salt from England The diameter of this master salt is 1 1/4". This salt was purchased in England. Open salts were commonly used as part of a completed dinner service prior to 1871, when a method was developed to keep salt free-flowing, even in damp weather. The master salt was used to hold the salt from which others were served.
