How amazing to find an original Victorian era ingrain carpet in such a large size and in such great condition.  Carpets of this kind were machine loomed, flat woven reversible and were extremely popular in the 1800’s.  Pennsylvania was one of only a couple of states that manufactured them.  The rug is made of wool and was most likely woven on a jacquard loom which is why you will see seams every 3 feet, the width of the loom.  The carpets were extremely durable.  They were also used as blankets by the soldiers during the Civil War.  The colors are still bright, having shades of gold, rust, green, cream and brown.  The pattern displays large leaves and trailing vines.  There is one area, roughly 6”, that has some wear and the threads have frayed.  This can be thoughtfully repaired.  There is also some seam separation.  These are not tears, but only where the loomed strips of carpet were stitched together and they can be easily reattached.  There is only one small 1.5” area along the edge which shows some loss and the rest is in excellent condition.  What a wonderful example of true Victorian floor covering.
