Elegant classic-style silver tastevin. The vessel is used by sommeliers and cellar masters to examine wine for quality. The tastevin is shaped in the traditional manner, with a convex bottom, the shallow curving sides dotted with large and small and curved gadrooning. The shape, combined with the sheen of the silver, allows the color of the wine to be fully appreciated in dark environments like a cellar or a candlelit room. The curved sides help concentrate the aroma, so only a very small amount of wine has to be poured from the bottle to judge quality. The looped handle allows the tastevin to be worn suspended from a chain. Tastevins with round thumbpieces are generally from the Paris region. The handle is marked appropriately with French 1st standard marks (950/1000 pure silver) and a partially obscured maker's mark. Origin: France, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, a couple of very small dings on the base (not readily visible because of the decorative design). Size: 2-11/16" diameter (excluding handle); 13/16" high. Weight: 37.0 grams.
