An extraordinary 19th century French silver berry spoon. The bowl, in the form of a strawberry leaf, is beautifully engraved with a pastoral scene in the Japonaise style. Worked against an engine-turned background, the engraving depicts a rustic cottage surrounded by wild roses and a sky filled with birds. The design is gilt in yellow, rose and green gold. The back of the bowl is simply engraved with veining to accent the leaf motif. The handle is decorated with complimentary bright-cut engraving in a floral motif. French serving pieces were often rather exuberant, but this is one of the most exciting pieces weve encountered. The bowl is marked with the first standard silver mark and an unidentified makers mark. Origin: France, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, all original, gilding intact, the very tip of the handle has a dimple that appears to be original to the making. Size: 9-1/2 long; 3-1/2 wide. Weight: 92.5 grams.
