95Here is a great late-Victorian Walnut Cabinet that began life as a treadle sewing machine "parlor cabinet". The sewing machine is long gone, but this cabinet is in magnificent condition and would make an excellent repurposed- night stand or office cabinet. This one dates to sometime in the late 1890's, it is all solid walnut with highly detailed moldings and applied carvings. The center of the top lid is the only veneer on the entire piece. Everything is original including the wooden wheels that roll from side to side. Only the 2 brass door pulls are replacements and we have added one center shelf in the interior.
This cabinet was produced in the late 1890's and was still available in the 1902 Sears Catalog. Parlor cabinets in those early days were found only in the homes of the wealthy and were designed to blend in with other fine furnishings in the home. The treadle sewing machine was the first piece of furniture that could be bought in installment payments, as they were tremendously expensive in their day.
Included with the cabinet is some of the original documentation which will also help date it and apparently the cabinet was originally owned by a German family who resided in Newark, NJ.
The cabinet makes an excellent appearance for itself, has no cosmetic issues and has been carefully refinished to retain the original patina of the wood, which now takes on an almost mahogany appearance. Never stored in a damp basement or attic - no must smells ever or water or insect damage.
