This walnut 2 piece desk is referred to as a cylinder roll secretary and these were extremely popular in the Victorian period. The top originally would have had a separate fancy carved crest above the cornice which is long since gone. Below the bold cornice are applied raised panels of decorative burled walnut and carved rosettes. There are 2 arched glass doors having their original working lock and key and wood escutcheon. Inside are 3 adjustable shelves. The cylinder rolls has raised and recessed panels of burled walnut with wooden and brass knobs. The roll slides back to reveal a slide out writing surface which retain its original fabric covering. There is expected wear and light staining on the writing surface. There are 2 small drawers with bird’s eye maple fronts and their original turned walnut knobs. There are also 7 various sized cubbies for storage. Each is embellished with carved trim in bird’s eye maple. The base has a long drawer over 2 additional drawers. All retain their original locks and period looking reproduction walnut and brass drop pulls. Notice the applied decorative burled walnut panels on the drawer fronts. The desk retains its original casters. The finish appears original and in excellent condition. What a commanding secretary for your home or office.
