Here is a classic Victorian crazy quilt made completely of silks, satins and velvets. Crazy quilts were the rage in the late Victorian era and made by women to display their sewing and needlework skills. Most quilts made using silk do not survive because of their delicate nature or are in extremely poor condition. We noted only one small silk piece which has deteriorated and another with some slight deterioration. The rest of the pieces are in excellent condition. Notice the extensive variety of embroidery stitches and embellishments including fans, flowers, an appliqued heart and a crescent, including other designs. The fabric colors are in dramatic jewel tones and the silk backing is a rich gold color. What a wonderful wall hanging size or draped at the foot of your bed or piano!
