This unique and exquisitely made Victorian writing desk is in the Aesthetic style. The use of cherry and bird’s eye maple woods, unusual form and attention to detail defines it as made by a sophisticated and recognized furniture maker. The desk comes in 2 pieces. The top shelf has a delicately carved gallery with 2 narrow drawers with bird’s eye maple fronts. The lower shelf has a beveled back mirror flanked by painted classical Grecian women with a lyre and a flute. The top shelf is supported by slender, finely turned posts. There are 3 more narrow drawers with bird’s eye maple fronts. The base has a slide out leather covered writing surface. Below are 2 small doors having deeply recessed bird’s eye maple panels with carved mouldings. The doors retain their original working lock and key. There follows 2 long drawers with birds eye maple fronts and its original brass hardware. The top drawer retains its original working lock. Notice the subtle carving on the 2 front corners of the desk and the delicate pierced carved panel between the front legs. The desk retains its original casters. The finish is in excellent condition having a very desirable patina and color combo. The mirror is original and in excellent condition. Notice how the back of the desk is even finished!
