An interesting Victorian 24K and 10K yellow gold watch chain comprising small natural gold nuggets joined by oval links. Nuggets were popular in mens jewelry during the California gold rush. Lucky miners often kept a few nuggets and had them made into stick pins, rings, watch fobs, etc. This is the first watch chain, weve seen. Fashionable gentlemen back on the East Coast learned of the trend and had similar pieces of exotic jewelry made for their own wardrobe. This chain retains the original clasp, but the gold-filled swivel hook is a replacement. The chain can be used to suspend a watch, but it is also long enough to be worn as a necklace or wrapped twice around the wrist as a bracelet. Tested and guaranteed 10K and 24K. Origin: America, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, all original except swivel. Size: 15-3/8 long. Weight: 11.0 gr.
