This is a very nice clean 8.5" long adjustable nut wrench marked "PAT. SEP. 7.97" and that is the Vandegrift patent date, in raised letters on one side. Can be found in the SCHULZ wrench reference book, number 965. Vandegrift Mfg. Co. was located in Shelbyville Indiana and were best known for wrenches and tools for farm machinery like International Harvestor, and McCormick. This wrench is in good shape overall with some wear. The jaws are spread open at the outside end just a bit, or about 3/64", mostly just wear. There is some minor pitting on it, some minor staining and scratches. It appears that someone has modified the twin main shafts at the end of each as the is some evidence of the ends being peened over some, most likely to tighten the moving jaw to the pins I would suppose. Some of these wrenches did come with wooden handle strips, this one was an all metal design. A nice styled wrench, works good. A very hard to find wrench!
