On September 2001, our nations enemies brought their fight to New York The USS New York will now bring the fight to our nations enemies well into the future. Gov. George Pataki
These stirring words perfectly echo the motto of the USS New York -- Never Forget. A mighty symbol of Americas resolve and determination to never surrender the fight against those who would harm us, the USS New York is born of the very metal that Americas enemies laid low on September 11, 2001.
Literally forged from the steel of the World Trade Center, the USS New York is a symbol of Americas fierce courage to never give in. The Navy inspected the steel for material strength, before the twisted metal from the September 11 attacks was reborn as part of the ship. After being measured worthy, 7.5 tons of the sacred steel was used to craft the bow stem of the ship.
The USS New York is the fifth ship in the LPD 17 San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock ships. Stretching 684 feet in length and displacing 24,900 tons, the USS New York carries a complement of 28 officers and 332 enlisted personnel and can travel at a top speed of 22 knots. The ship will be used to transport and land Marines and supplies as well to support amphibious assault, special operations and expeditionary warfare missions through the first half of the 21st Century.
After the unforgiveable acts of that September morning, New York Governor George Pataki petitioned the Secretary of the Navy to honor the victims and heroes of that fateful day by naming the ship the USS New York. Though state names are typically reserved for submarines, special consideration was given and the Navy approved the naming of the USS New York in 2002. The ship will receive its commission in November 2009.
