.69 cal. 42" round smoothbore barrel, lightly cleaned to a pewter finish over light pitting; view and proof marks at breech. Lockplate with eagle over “U.S.” and stamped at rear “HARPERS/FERRY/1851". Hammer and lockplate with dark pitting over gray finish. Tight action with strong mainspring; functions smoothly. Steel ramrod with tulip-shaped head; bayonet lug removed from underside of barrel. Three barrel bands, the forward one with integral blade sight. Oil finished walnut full stock with comb, carved with several sets of initials, probably representing different owners. Wood sound with light handling marks. The M1842 was the first regulation model musket in percussion and the last made in .69 cal. smoothbore. These muskets were used early in the Civil War until sufficient quantities of rifled muskets could be supplied.
