August Nicholas Cain (1822-1894) Bronze Sculpture of Vulture and Sphinx

This wonderful bronze cast from a model by Auguste-Nicholas Cain (French, 1822-1894) is entitled Vautour Fauve sur une Tete de Sphinx (Vulture on the Head of the Sphinx).  Measures: 20 x 8.5 x 9 in; 51 x 22 x 23 cm.  Signed A CAIN with inscribed mark of the foundry, Susse Freres of Paris.

This model, in plaster, debuted at the 1863 Salon, and was exhibited in bronze in 1865 and at the Exposition Universelle of 1867. Thereafter is was ordered by the Jardin des Plantes. Susse Freres cast the piece in three sizes.
