Victorian Era *SPLIT / DOUBLE* FORE EDGE PAINTINGS
WHEN YOU OPEN THE TEXT BLOCK OF THE BOOK
DOWN THE MIDDLE, THERE IS A WATERCOLOR PAINTING
ON THE FORE EDGE OF EITHER SIDE OF THE BOOK.
DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ASK, THIS IS SOMETIMES REFERRED
TO AS A DOUBLE FORE EDGE PAINTING,
AND SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS A SPLIT FORE EDGE PAINTING.
FOR SIMPLICITIES SAKE, I AM REFERRING TO IT AS A SPLIT / DOUBLE
FORE EDGE PAINTING.
WHEN YOU OPEN THE BOOK TO IT'S CENTER, YOU CAN SEE THE
PAINTINGS ON EITHER SIDE. THEN, BY GENTLY FANNING THE PAGES,
THE PAINTING IS REVEALED IN MORE DETAIL.
WHEN YOU CLOSE THE BOOK, THE PAINTINGS DISAPPEAR.
THE PAINTINGS WERE PAINTED BY FANNING THE PAGES,
AND PAINTING ON THE VERY TIPS OF THE FANNED PAGES.
THEN, AFTER THE PAINT WAS DRY, THE BOOK WOULD HAVE
BEEN CLOSED AND A GOLD GILDING APPLIED TO THE FORE EDGES.
