Large 19th century Victorian tortoiseshell brooch inlaid with gold and silver pique work. Circa mid 1800s. The genuine tortoise shell is a convex domed shape, and the inlay work is the entwined initials AIE, for Amity, Infinity Eternity - there is a fancy border around the edge of the brooch. As is often with these gorgeous and collectable pique work pieces, they often are missing a little piece of inlay - there is a tiny piece missing on this one, and two edges of the initials are lifting from the surface. The lifting edges may very well be able to be set down with a suitable glue. There are two chips to the edge of the brooch as well - these could be filled if desired, this is an easy fixer. The little faults don't detract from the stylish design, and all are restorable. Beautiful piece, measuring 40mm in diameter with the original pin to the back. These pique pieces of jewelry are getting quite rare.
