Damascene
Damascene is the Art of applying and inlaying 18K and 24K gold, as well as other precious metals, onto a specially prepared iron or steel substrate to produce fine patterns and figural images.

First developed in Damascus, Syria during Antiquity, thereafter it was practiced for centuries by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, as well as subsequently introduced into Spain during the Moorish invasion. The craft took particular foothold in the Spanish city of Toledo, from where, during the Middle Ages, Damascene objects and jewelry became greatly sought after by the wealthy throughout Europe.

Damascene pieces generally reflect one of two distinct designs: Arabesque (representing geometric designs) or Renaissance (displaying figural representations such as variations of birds and flowers).

Entirely crafted by hand, these are obtained by engraving deep, patterned cuts into the blackened iron substrate and then embedding the gold and precious metals into the lines of the design. This gold is then hammered until it penetrates into the cuts, forming the design. Thereafter, on the finest pieces, the gold may be further engraved for the finest pieces to show great detail.
