It has been over sixty years since Eugene Jaquet and Alfred Chapuis's History of the Self-Winding Watch was published in 1952.
This new book by Jean-Claude Sabrier exemplifies the increasingly scientific and methodical procedure adopted by researchers and historians since the 1960's. This approach has made it possible to precisely determine the true origin of the watches sold throughout Europe as well as in the Middle East, Asia, and the United States.
This book is the result of years of in-depth and systematic research into period archives by well-known specialist and expert Jean-Claude Sabrier. He has carefully examined correspondence, minutes of meetings, account books, patents, and other important original documents. They shed new light on the companies and workshops that produced self-winding watches in the Neuchatel region, where the absence of guild regulations meant that watchmakers rarely signed their work, as well as elsewhere in Switzerland and in England, France, and Germany.
The book additionally features illustrations and descriptions of many hitherto unknown watches.
