One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** The Ordeal of Oliver Airedale or To the Dogs and Back. By D. T. Carlisle. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1941. [84p.], yellow cloth with black lettering and red illustration, color illustrations throughout by the author. A satire with teeth in it — an early World War II rallying call in anticipation of American participation in the defeat of the Nazis. Oliver Airedale of Caninia, a descendant of Thaddeus Airedale from Angleterria, sorts out the dogfight between Hundia and Angleterria and calls for ‘tying the can to Der Pootsch!’ Covers have some light soiling, tips bumped, pencil notation on top corner, Mr. Fretwell's bp on front fixed endpaper, interior clean and sound. VG to VG+ condition.
