Description:
A quality oil painting on canvas by the London historical genre painter William Maw Egley, 1826-1916.Egley's work can be divided into three phases. In his first period which lasted from about 1843-1855, he painted literary illustrations mainly taken from Moliere and Shakespeare. In 1855 Egley turned to painting scenes of contemporary life. The fact that he was a friend of Frith, and painted several backgrounds in his pictures, must obviously of influenced his style and direction. In his last period Egley turned to eighteenth century costume and historical pieces in the manner of Marcus Stone. Egley's works are listed in his diaries which are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, he lists over 1,000 paintings done between 1840 and 1910. The artist exhibited at the Royal Academy 1843-1898, also at the British Institution and at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.
