Description: Chuval. Turkmen, Trans-Caspian steppes central Asia, early quater 20th century. Chuvals were the largest storage bags produced by all turkmen tribes and were always woven in pairs. During sedentary period the Chuvals were hung around the wals of the tents to hold clothing and cooking utensils, and during migration they were tied to either flanks of the camelproviding an evenly balanced load. The majority of Chuvals made were pile woven on the face or front and plain woven on the back. Many collectors and museums have Chuvals in their possession.
