Italian Marble Bust-Roman Emperor, C. 1890

This regal and large Italian marble bust of a Roman Emperor is possibly Maximinus I, who ruled from 235-238. He died at Aquileia attempting to put down a Senatorial revolt.  Regardless of who this bust may be after, it has been sculpted from a magnificent piece of marble. The sculptor has used an area of the marble for his head and face that are in warm shades of creams, tans and browns for what seems to be perfectly placed highlights and shadows.  He bears a wreath of stylized leaves and berries around the circumference of his head.  This, along with his hair, and the drape of cloth over his shoulder, are all fairly typical attributes of how Roman Emperors have been portrayed.

The back has been chiseled with the sculptor’s own choice of motif. This regal Italian bust will an asset to any area it is placed. Condition: Very minor chips and rubs.
