Beautifully engraved certificate from the State of South Carolina issued in 1871. This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a cotton plant and American Flags. This item is hand signed by the state's govenor, Robert Scott, and its treasurer and is over 131 years old. The certificate has period cut cancellations and light toning.
Certificate Vignette As governor of South Carolina, Robert Scott defrauded many investors who put their faith and trust in the issuance of state-backed bonds that were never paid. The scandal rocked his administration and furthered the mistrust that was desparately needed to continue the path of reconstruction. This bond is for 100 Pounds sterling payable in gold coin in the City of London, England.
