Stanley No. 220 Block Plane Late 1800's Type 1
This is a very clean, early vintage Stanley block plane dating back to the late 1800's era, or a type 1. It is clean, rust free, with about 80% of it's original black Jappaning intact, with most of the paint wear on the cap cover. This one is marked "STANLEY RULE & LEVEL" (rounded logo) on the cutter, and "STANLEY NO. 220" on the bed. The cap cover is also marked with a patent date "PATD.10.12.97". We note a very early type cap cover, with a different slotted hole and cross grid pattern than others we have seen. We believe this one to be a very early model. The cap cover fits onto a smaller screw than the others we have seen of the type 1, works and holds just fine. The front knob is rosewood with a clear finish on it, solid no cracks, a few minor dings, and clear finish flaws noted. The cutter is sharp, nice clean iron, with lots of stock left for feature use. This block plane features the large nickel plated cast iron thumb wheel for adjusting the cutter depth, works great! In good working order overall, no damage, a few minor scratches on the bottom noted. A very clean, 7" long bed x 1.62" cutter width smooth plane, ready to work condition!
