This is a nice antique 12" sweep ratchet brace with rosewood handles, and the rare flip-latch type ratchet direction control design, works great! It is marked "P.S.& W. CO." (PECK, STOW & WILCOX CO.) and "1201" on the arm, also marked "PAT'D JULY 9, 1895" on the chuck sleeve. All the moving parts, chuck, jaws, ratchet system and handles are in very good working condition. All the wood is solid, with some minor dents and scratches noted. There is some pitting noted on the steel arms, and some on the chuck sleeve, but none noted on the interior parts, not rusty now anywhere, clean and ready to work.
This brace has a number of quality features that we don't see on every brace such as ball bearing spindle on the butt handle, and adjustable flanges on the crank handle that allow you to move them and clean or lubricate the crank handle shaft area if you wish, plus the rare easy to use flip latch ratchet control tabs! Also noted that this company seems to choose the most select rosewood material available, making this tool a long lasting, nice looking bit brace!
A rarely seen vintage brace from the early 1900's era! We have many braces to choose from for sale here at this website store, we don't see many like this one!
