Stanley No. 8 Spotford Hand Auger Brace
This is a good old brace marked "NO. 8 STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO. NEW BRITAIN CONN. U.S.A." on one side of the thumbscrew and "ORD. DEPT. U.S.A." on the other side. It features a very simple, all metal design with the split chuck, that closes to hold the auger bits with a few turns of that thumbscrew. This brace was originally Japanned black, and about 50% of that is worn off of this one. The end handle turns very smoothly, and feels a lot like the ball bearing type, but is a bushing type design. The swing is an 8" swing brace, which means the distance from the end stock center to the crank handle center is 4 inches. Overall, very clean, no rust or cracks, good chuck, thumbscrew and threads. These military ordinance braces were only made for about a year in the 1930's, and this is one of those that was most likely used or at least made for the U.S.A. Ordinance department of the military services. The condition of this brace is the best we have seen of all we have sold in the past 20 years! Don't miss out, these are hard to find!
