A most unusual smoked glass biscuit barrel with a pleasing scroll & circular pattern. Its silver plate hinged lid is very rare as the vast majority of Biscuit Barrels feature separate lids. Also remarkable is the elaborate "sheaf of wheat" finial.
English Biscuit Barrels were originally used for the biscuits (similar to American crackers but sweeter) served at tea time. As the tea services became more elaborate and ritualized, more elegant the Biscuit Barrels were needed.
Biscuit Barrels make great wedding presents, elegant display pieces for marble collections of marbles, match books and even have been known to store Christmas ornaments!
