A very pretty piece, yet a bit of a mystery. I believe it may be from the 1960's, this type of jewelry was very popular then. It is gold plated and nicely done. But, I have been unable to come to any conclusion as to just how it was used. It may have been made to clip onto a hat band or as a type of scarf clip. The mechanisim on the back resembles a bobby pin in shape. But, then why make it to where the sword could be removed from the scabbard? It originaly had a saftey chain, you can see where the ring on the scabbard has been broken off. This would not be very hard to replace. It measures aprox. 2 1/2"X1 1/2".
