This is a wonderful presentation piece that came out of the estate of Col. Jesse Gurney Vincent (1880-1962), former Vice President of the Packard Motor Co. This heavy (7.71 troy ounces) sterling silver and bronze lidded cigarette jar bears Vincent's initials on one side, The heavy gauge piece is marked Sterling on the bottom and under the lid, but bears no maker's mark. Aside from the bronze metal insert at the top, the jar is of simple form but its quality workmanship belies the manufactories of firms like Gorham or Tiffany. Dimensions are 4 inches high x 2-7/8 inches wide at the base. Vincent was the son of a blacksmith and proprietor of his own tool business by age 10. Chief engineer and later vice president of engineering at Packard between 1912 and 1915, he designed the high performance Packard Twin, Straight-8 and the V-12 engines. While he served in the army, he established the Packard Aircraft Engine Dept. and developed the famed V-12 Liberty Aero Engine used in World War I. He was awarded 206 patents and moved up through the ranks of Packard over a 33 year career. Vincent is a member of the Automotive Hall of Fame and, became it belonged to him, this is a great piece of automotive memorabilia.
