Some time in the early 1900's a talented, creative woman began to crochet this basket. Surely she had a pattern because the design is so perfect. The lid is attached to the basket. I am puzzled by the shiny appearance of the basket. In the past I've seen brightly-colored fish line used by Chinese and African basket makers, but this is an old basket and, judging from the design and contents, I believe its maker was an American. It is interesting how she made folders of small white envelopes and placed bits of embroidery in each. In photo 2 you see a triangular white spot. That spot is the only fault I find with the basket. I've made no attempt to clean the top which has collected dust (I guess) from being in storage. You can see the contents in photos 3 and 4. There's history in the embroidery thread. On three of the J & P Coats skeins is pat.Dec.27,1921. There are 3 J & P Coats with no date, 4 Starr (American Thread Co. Fall River, Mass. and 1 old Bucilla. There are 2 Clark's O.N.T. embroidery thread. The O.N.T. stands for Our New Thread. Clark's opened his factory in 1812 in Paisley, Scotland. A few years later James Coats opened another cotton thread mill. Most of their thread was exported to the U.S. In 1864 grandsons of James Clark opened a cotton thread mill in Newark, New Jersey. In 1869 the Coats family began manufacturing thread in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In the 1890 Clark's had the first fast black thread, the first embroidery cotton and all color fast to boiling. In 1952 Coats & Clark merged and much later Starr became part of the American Thread Company.I don't know what the metal piece is that's within the wooden circles.
