Large 16 ½" x 20 ½" gelatin silver print. The photographer has endorsed it on the bottom margin, recto: "To PeeDee: Finally! Art Kane 2/85."
Kane (1925 - 1995) was active in many areas of photography, but is most well-known for his portraits of musicians-- major jazz and rock artists. His celebrated portrait of a gathering of 58 jazz artists, published in ESQUIRE in 1958, is the subject of a film.
Here the group is much smaller, allowing for each of the relaxed subjects to shine in his own light. It is interesting to compare this with arranged daguerreotype group portraits from more than 100 years earlier.
