Pierre-Joseph Redout(1759 -1840) was aBelgianpainterandbotanist, known for hiswatercoloursofroses, liliesand other flowers atMalmaison. He was nicknamed "TheRaphaelof flowers".
He was an official court artist of QueenMarie Antoinette, and he continued painting through theFrench RevolutionandReign of Terror. Redout survived the turbulent political upheaval to gain international recognition for his precise renderings of plants, which remain as fresh in the early 21st century as when first painted.
Pariswas the cultural and scientific centre of Europe during an outstanding period inbotanical illustration(1798 - 1837), one noted for the publication of severalfoliobooks with colouredplates. Enthusiastically, Redout became an heir to the tradition of theFlemishandDutchflower paintersBrueghel,Ruysch, van Huysumandde Heem. Redout contributed over 2,100 published plates depicting over 1,800 differentspecies, many never rendered before.
