This is set of 4 bowls, made of lacquer, they use this for rice and also for soup.A beautiful motif of crysanthemum in gold maki-e paint. The condition is excellent for the age, shows normal use but no chips and cracks. The authentic lacquer is made of wood, nowadays in Japan, when you go to the restaurant you can rarely find a place that use the wood but plastic, its cheaper to use a plastic than made of wood so most of them prefer to use the plastic instead though not all but its become very popular nowadays. Lacquer is the complex resin made from lacquer tree sap.It is toxic before drying, irritating the skin like poison ivy, and leaving burns on contact (many lacquer workers have weals). the best sap commonly in Kyoto area and Okayama.
