Prior to the Civil War Messrs. Sharp & Hamilton operated a farming implement company under the trade name of Nashville Plow Works. With war on the horizon, the owners converted their establishment into an armory. It is unknown how many cavalry swords were produced under the name Nashville Plow Works, but the number could not have been very great with the city being taken by the Federals on April 1st, 1862. Two variants of the guard are found; one with a stippled background (the one most commonly faked) and the one with the smooth background, as this example features. The brass guard is crudely cast, integrating CSA and NASHVILLE PLOW WORKS on the face. Knucklebow and three branches, with single quillon; smooth pommel and integral backstrap. Original black leather wrap with twisted brass wire and iron ferrule at the base. Single-edged 35" blade with crudely machined unstopped single fuller. No scabbard, otherwise fine original condition. Overall length 40 ½".
