Signed, titled and dated verso in pencil. All of Ruth Bernhards shell photographs from this group were made between 1943-1949 of shells she collected while on a trip to Florida prior to 1943. While Bernhard is best known for her nudes (Ansel Adams proclaimed her the greatest photographer of the female nude), the following commentary on her work appeared in U.S. Camera 1942 p. 180: Ruth Bernhard ... prefers any subject matter which offers something of the mystic or imaginary element; pictures the abstracts rather than the realities of the modern world. 20cm NOV08 WSFP
