Made during the reign of Tsar Alexander III by the prominent Moscow silversmiths, Khlebnikov, the set comprises a pair of ovoid salt shakers, with a matching cylindrical moutardier and a parcel-gilt spoon. The top of each shaker is pierced and screws on to the base, which is weighted with solid silver, enabling the shakers to remain upright to minimize spills.
By Ivan Khlebnikov and Sons, Moscow, 1888. Stamped with maker’s Cyrillic initials, 84, for the Russian silver standard, the Moscow town mark, and the date of 1888 on the mustard pot.
