Chiseled steel hilt featuring knucklebow, pas d’ane, double shell guards, and ovoid pommel, profusely inlaid overall with silver floral decoration on a blackened background. Grip wrapped with two sizes of twisted silver wire. Slender 29 1/2" diamond-section blade with the first 4 1/2" hexagonal and inlaid with brass (some loss). Very good condition with minor losses to silver inlay as typically found. Possibly Dutch. Overall length 35 1/2". These early smallswords show exceptional workmanship. As opposed to most smallswords of the 18th and 19th Centuries, which were generally gilt with gold or silver leaf, these early examples were actually chiseled with grooves in which solid silver wire was inserted and then carved in three dimensions to finish the design.
