Entitled Lys (Lily), this fabulous full scale marble sculpture by Emanuelle Villanis (1858-1914) measures an impressive 61.5 inches tall and depicts a lovely maiden in elegant dress. Condition is very good. There are general marks and scratches, consistsent with age, and slight rubbing and surface dirt, with minor chipped losses to the extremities, most notable the index finger on right hand, plus a noticeable loss at the corner of the pedestal.
A well-listed and admired sculptor whose works regularly appear at major auction, Villanis is known for his sculptures in marble and bronze, particularly mythological figures, local figures in figurines, busts and full figure. He studied at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, and exhibited in Turin, Milan and Rome. In 1885 he returned to France and settled in Montmartre. He exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1886 to 1910, and won an honourable mention at the 1892 Salon and the Exposition Universelle of 1899.
