Arts & Crafts Block-Printed Children's Book in the style of Roycroft
John Martin retells the famous moral parables of Aesop in rhyming strophes and illustrates with bold wood-block prints in orange and black. There are full page and inset pictures as well as small vignettes. His use of black is rather daring and makes some of his illustrations quite captivating.
He retells many of the best known fables such as "The Tortoise and the Hare", "The Fox and the Grapes" and "Belling the Cat" and many more less well known but equally illuminating tales. He also includes many short poems based on the morals.
