Rosewood Belter Marble Top Etagere

Rare rosewood Rococo Victorian etagere made by John Henry Belter, NYC. This piece has a lovely carved crest (note: there is a horizontal 4″ crack in the top crest – see photo) and step in platform base. There is a central arched mirror as well as mirrors on the sides. The mirrors are original and in exceptionally good condition with traces of “diamond dust” near the bottoms. Shaped shelves decorate the sides – two of which have the original marble tops (some staining to the marbles). The tops and bottoms of the shelves have a very fancy pierce carved laminated rosewood trim around tops and bottoms. Double open carved supports hold up the two marble shelves. Two similar etageres can be seen on pages 148 and 76 of American Furniture of the 19th Century by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. The marble top bottom shelves and laminated trim is a trademark of Belter’s work. At only 84″ tall it is small enough to fit in any house – unlike most other great ones made in this period.
