For Sale I have a very nice piece of Art Pottery made by The Rookwood Pottery Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Shape is a rather unique shape. I would call this a Footed Squat Vase.
The Vase displays a Rookwood Glaze that I have never seen before. I would call this a Speckled Drippy Mottled Blue Glaze and is simply Beautiful!! The Vase displays what looks like Vertically Carved Leaves that rise up from the bottom foot an into the fold of the Vessel than Flares back out and up to the top Rim. The Top Rim is irregular due to the 6 Leaf Tips that extend just a little above the Rim. This kind of looks like Sea Weed that would rise off the bottom of the Ocean's Floor. The raised Carved Leaves reminds me of Grueby Pottery and I wouldn't be a bit surprised that Grueby Pottery influenced the design of this Vase. Since Grueby Pottery was out of Business by 1909 I couldn't say that Rookwood created this to compete with them.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The Piece is signed on the bottom with Rookwood's Reverse RP and Sunburst Logo along with the roman numerals XIX for the year of manufacture, 1919 and the mold number 2358. This is a lovely piece of Art Pottery in a Form that is Rarely Found with Rookwood. This piece is substantial and quite Heavy for its size. It has the weight a Fulper piece of Art Pottery would have. This would look outstanding on that Stickley, Mission, Arts and Crafts Style Bookcase. I'm sure the buyer will be extremely pleased!!
