No one could do it better than one of the big names in sterling silver flatware and hollowware companies, such as Gorham. We think you will be pleased with this sterling silver sea shell nut and candy dish of you opt to add it to your collection of fine sterling items. In 1831 in Providence , Rhode Island, Jabez Gorham and Henry L. Webster became partners and founded the Gorham Silver Manufacturing Company. In the beginning they made only spoons made from coin silver, the only silver used for flatware at the time. They also made thimbles, some jewelry, lady’s combs, etc. They got a big boost in 1842 when a tariff, for all intents and purposes, blocked silverware from entering the country. The biggest change came five years later when Jabez retired and his son, John took over and mechanized their production, improved their designs, introduced new designs, and enlarged their facilities. John toured facilities in Europe, investigated improvements in manufacturing, and hired skilled craftsmen to train his American workers. The White House used Gorham services during the days of Mary Todd Lincoln, and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, and Gorham designed an awesome commemorate Century Vase composed of 70,000 dimes in 1899. They were also the creators of the famed Furber 740-piece service as opulent as they come for Henry Jewett Furber, president of a New York insurance company. The George W. Bush family chose Gorham Chantilly as the service on Air Force One.
