"Hark, the herald angels sing!" I have always imagined that this German High Renaissance figure of an archangel originally must have held a music book in his missing hands. Even in its deteriorated state, there is a magnificence to the statue's graceful, liquid form, and fortunately, there is no damage to the carving of the handsome, beatific face. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy old marble base. It is in healthy condition and measures some 20 inches high without its antique marble plinth. German, probably Nuremburg, late 15th Century.
