Renaissance Statue Of Archangel
“Hark, the herald angels sing!” I have always imagined that the missing hands of this finely carved German High Renaissance archangel originally must have held a missile. The marks of age have not destroyed the magnificence of the statue’s graceful, liquid form and, fortunately, the beatific face retains its youthful radience. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy, old marble plinth. It is in healthy condition and measures some 20 inches high above the base. German, probably Nuremburg, late 15th Century.
