Wow - what a cool sofa form! We have never owned a Victorian sofa having this kind of unique shape to the seating area. It lends itself to intimate conversations between 2 people. Its design and execution makes it attributable to the well-known cabinetmaker John Jelliff (Jeliff) of Newark NJ. The 3 crests on the back are elaborately and abundantly carved. Notice the carved drapes, applied multiple burled walnut panels, drop finials and faces. Suck portraits are often referred to as Jenny Lind, Lady Liberty or the head of Columbia. The sides gracefully curve inwards and end with beautiful carved profiles of women on the armrests. Notice how their facial features, hair and clothing are delicately executed. The shapely seat rail has incised carved and applied burled walnut panels on either side of a boldly pierced carved center medallion. The linen type off-white fabric is deeply tufted and in excellent condition. The sofa retains its original casters. The frame is tight, having no breaks or repairs. Its finish is in excellent condition having a warm color and rich patina.
