RCA Victor Special Model K Portable Phonograph by John Vassos

Unavailable
This Model K portable phonograph was designed by John Vassos (1898-1985) for RCA Victor, and produced circa 1935. It features an aluminum case and original bakelite handle. This unique design features a battery-powered amplifier and speaker. There are restorations and glue residue visible on the rear of the lid behind the album storage panel. The original battery compartment has been replaced to accommodate modern "D" size batteries. Turntable winding mechanism works fine, but the turntable wobbles a bit and creates some friction underneath the platter. Arm has a needle installed but we have not yet tested the entire unit and cannot report on the working condition of the amplifier and speakers. The design is features on page 315 of the exhibition catalog for The Machine Age, The Brooklyn Museum. Additional images forwarded upon request. Dimensions: 8" H X 17" W X 18" D (20.3 cm H X 43.2 cm W X 45.7 cm D). ( za- )
