Similar to the other siege armour I have for sale, but this one is homogeneous, with a matching gold trim painted on the edge of both helm and breastplate. Dating to the Thirty Years War, this scarce siege armour was worn by sappers (siege engineers) who worked directly under the walls of fortifications and came under intense enemy fire. It is of very heavy construction, consisting of a pot helmet with front and rear visors (armourer's mark on brim) with ear flaps, and a breastplate with shoulder straps. This is the complete armour and it was never intended to have a back plate or other elements. What makes this armour especially desirable is the fact that both the helmet and breastplate have their original black paint and original padded linen lining. The breastplate features a shallow bullet test proof. The original padded leather shoulder straps (ends missing) are worn and have separated where they join the breastplate, but retain their original reinforcing chains. Both pieces have some wear to lining and the paint is faded and flaking in spots, but overall very good condition for their age. A very affordable complete and rare 17th C armour. Another dealer has just the helm offered, lacking ear flaps and liner, for $4600. Contact seller for additional information and photos.
