THE HOGUP TRADE COMPANY BUY<>SELL<>TRADE RARE Very early Yaudanche Paiute Shoshone Cradle Board. The Yaudanche people lived in Olancha, Inyo County, California and are derived from both the Shoshone and the Paiute cultures. They are a Numic speaking people and only about 55 true Yaudanche tribal members still living. This wonderfully preserved cave find cradle board dates to around 1850. Found in 1955 in a cave along the Owens river drainage. It is constructed from Sand Bar Willow and Red Bud shoots. The frame is of a willow "Y" branch that has been looped and tied at the top. The bottom of the frame has been sharpened so as to be able to plant it in soft soil, rather than being hung in a tree. The back rest is willow shoots tied into place using a white muslin fabric, each piece is individually tied. The sun shade is made out of Redbud shoots, the leading edge has been wrapped in a dyed blue muslin fabric as is the back edge of the sun shade. The cross shoots on the front of the shade are tied with a red and tan died hand spun cordage. The cradle strapping's are also a white muslin fabric strip that is tied in the center with a strip of green cured hide as is what is left of the back strap for carrying, this strap is mostly missing but still has several inches left. All seems are hand sewn using a hand spun thread/cordage. This extremely RARE type of cradle board is very unique and most likely only one known to exist.
