This antique Chinese painted cabinet with matching trunk is a rare and wonderful find. Every thing about this cabinet and trunk is exceptional. The majority of the red lacquered finish and paintings are original. In places, the lacquer finish reveals the traditional technique of a cloth underlay, with numerous applications of black lacquer, topped with numerous applications of red lacquer. The paintings are intricately detailed-in hues of black, brown, gold and other colors. The painted scenes are of gardens, landscapes, people, Chinese symbols, and dozens of children playing-connoting the "100 Babies Blessing" poem. The main cabinet has two large removable doors and two drawers. Inside this section are two areas divided by a shelf and a hidden compartment on the lower shelf. The door brass medallion is repeated on the trunk. The upper compartment trunk is spacious. Traditionally, the trunk would be placed on top of the cabinet. Today, the trunk could be used in the same room as either a coffee table or as a bench-by adding a sturdy top and a cushion.
