Rare Antique Bronze Cherub Coffin Plate Late 1800's plaque
Many times when people were buried, a crucifix or a coffin plate would be temporarily nailed to the casket. This would have been one of those Funeral items and it is quite spectacular. Prior to burial the crucifix or plaque would be given to the family as a mourning memorial. The work on this is so highly detailed and exquisite that it is actually a miniature work of art. There is a paper tag on the back that is worn and illegible. You see 2 Cupids with arrow and staff and angel wings standing in a large pot full of grapes which they are dancing in. There is also an urn resting against it. A young child in a grecian robe is pouring the grapes into it and is surrounded buy an arch of vines. The plaque measures 5 3/4" x 4 1/2" and has one corner that has lost its edge. I am fairly certain this was not machine pressed. IT is bronze and not brass.
